Cold chain

Mapping of the flow of resources, products, and information in the agricultural cold chain of Panama

Yamilka Collado

Dalys Delgado

Carlos Osorio

Alvaro Lasso
Description

As the implementation of the cold chain is totally new for Panamanian producers, truck drivers, and marketers, deficiencies are apparent along the entire process, resulting in reduced quality and shelf life of product and occasional safety issues. The main objective of this project is to understand what happens to the product moving towards the market once it leaves the farm through a qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Objectives
  • Collect the data from producers, drivers and employees from the cold chain about the processes, handling and routes.
  • Determine financial benefits for producers and drivers when using the cold chain.
Deliverables
  • Make a mapping of the most important products from the cold chain with its respective activities during its transportation, routes and time.
  • Record the capacity and conditions of transportation available from producers to market.

Constainer Transshipment

Panama Constainer Transshipment by trucks

Armando Rengifo

Osvaldo Ortega

Jan Chong
Description

The transshipment operation is one of the main internal container movement in Panama. The main transportation mode used is the train but it has a huge demand so it doesn´t have full time availability. This project is entitled to analyze another way of fulfilling this operation which is by truck, providing details of potential risks and advantages of this mode. The final purpose of the study is to deliver a full data compilation and analysis, so authorities and companies involved in the operation can start with an immediate comparison between their actual process (mostly by train) and this new alternative.

Objectives
  • Understand the impact of truck transshipment operation in the supply chain.
  • Determine which are the most time consuming activities in the truck transshipment operation.
  • Collect and analyze the truck transshipment trip information.
  • Suggest some alternatives to increase competitiveness of the transshipment by truck operation.
