"Long-haul Trucking Industry"

Dania Velarde

Gabriel de la Iglesia

Benigno Ureña

Luis Salazar
Description

This project analyzes and provides access to relevant information regarding the long haul trucking industry in Panama, mainly the processes and documentation needed to cross borders and rates from/to Central America. It also shows two perspectives about what the law says and what is actually done and the representation of the common long-haul trucking routes. In addition, a guideline on "how to start a trucking company" has been developed to promote and facilitate the creation of new businesses.

General Objective

Document, analyze and provide access to relevant information regarding the trucking industry in Panama, mainly the long haul trucking sector, and help the decision making of government entities, potential investors, private sector, and general public.

Specific Objectives
  • Create an assessment of the trucking industry in Panama with focus on the long-haul trucking sector.
  • Investigate the inland freight movement (imports, exports, and internal) of Panama. Depict the common long-haul trucking routes and rates.
  • Analyze possible trends and aspects that can contribute or affect the development of the trucking industry.
  • Create a guideline on "how to start a trucking company" to promote and facilitate the creation of new business.

Shipping

"Short Sea Shipping System in Central America and the Caribbean"

Carla García

Nathalie Hayot

Patricia Chang

Yeniffer Hicks
Description

This project has evaluated the implementation of a Short Sea Shipping System, using Panama as a hub for exports and imports within the region, by including intra-regional and inter-regional trade. The study begins with the selection of the countries that will compose our region of study, by evaluating the current demand traded by them, their geographic position, and the three major countries exporting to the region. Taking into account the existing regulations for this type of transportation, the existing ports and their specification, the demand of products and other goods, and infrastructure available, a group of ports were chosen to be analyzed for the system. Through the use of this information, as well as an evaluation of the existing competition within the system, an assessment of capacity determined the suitable size of the ships. With the countries, ports and ships chosen, the most efficient cost and demand wise routes were calculated.

Objectives
  • Evaluate the opportunities of creating a short sea shipping system for intraregional trade within the region of study.
  • Evaluate the use of a short sea shipping system to promote the export of goods within the region, using Panama as a hub.
  • Evaluate underutilized ports within the region as a part of a short sea shipping system, in order to reduce congestion at major hub ports and roads access.
  • Establish strategic elements for a short sea shipping system:
    • Infrastructure (type of vessel and ports)
    • Most efficient routes
    • Traded goods

Logistics Hub

"Retail Logistics Hub in Panama"

Gennisse Forte

Juan Carlos Peña

Danna Ramírez
Description

This project's goal is to understand the benefits for global retailers for establishing their regional operations in the existing free zones and logistics parks in Panama that have labor, migratory, and fiscal incentives. To achieve this goal, three locations were compared in terms of establishment costs, operational costs and taxes: Colon Free Zone, Panama Pacifico and Parque Sur.

Objectives
  • Understand and model different scenarios for establishing a regional distribution center in Panama in order to create a value case and a subsequent business plan for retail companies interested in using Panama's capabilities to improve their supply chain.
  • Investigate and show all the benefits and opportunities that Panama has to offer as a logistic hub for the retail industry in terms of trucking, containerized cargo, air cargo and warehousing capacity as well as the connectivity within the country, taxes laws and incentives related to use Panama.
  • Compare Panama Special Economic Zones to answer the questions where to locate a distribution facility, how much it could cost and the advantages of using Panama in a global retail supply chain.
